Timeform pick out their three best bets from the Curragh on Irish 2000 Guineas day…
“The booking of Frankie Dettori is a big plus…”
Timeform on Lethal Power
Magna Grecia – Curragh 15:35
This year’s Irish 2000 Guineas is fascinating, and poses an interesting conundrum for punters, as it pitches last year’s outstanding two-year-old Too Darn Hot up against Magna Grecia, who won the English Guineas earlier this month in that rival’s absence. In terms of Timeform ratings, Magnca Grecia sits 1 lb clear of Too Darn Hot, and he’s done very little wrong in his career so far, winning the Guineas in clear-cut style, and his only defeat so far came to Persian King last season – who has gone on to win the French Guineas this term. Considering how impressive he was in the English Guineas, Magna Grecia just shades the vote over Too Darn Hot, who may find this coming a touch too quick having run at York nine days ago.
Lethal Power – Curragh 16:45
Lethal Power shaped with plenty of encouragement when finishing third on his reappearance over a mile here at the beginning of the month, doing the best of those who were ridden close to a strong pace and also the best of those from a low draw. The booking of Frankie Dettori is a big plus and provided he can stay out of trouble here, Lethal Power gets the vote to take this off the same mark as last time. Two others to mention are the Joseph O’Brien-pair Downdraft and Ming.
Isotope – Curragh 17:20
A competitive heat, in which it looks worth siding with Isotope. He showed a very likeable attitude when opening his account over ever-so-slightly further at Cork last month, giving the impression that there was more to come from him yet, and he looks capable of defying an 8 lb rise to follow up. Vivax is another open to improvement, and is most feared on handicap debut after winning (dead-heated) at Dundalk 22 days ago, while Sherkali caught the eye a bit last time and is also respected with a rare ride for Frankie Dettori in Ireland.
