Chris Miles from Sportingbet Australia casts his eye over Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby.

Ambitious Dragon ($2.60) heads up a stellar field in the 2011 Hong Kong Derby to be run at Sha Tin Racecourse this Sunday. The New Zealand bred son of Pins has taken Hong Kong by storm this season winning 5 or his last 6 starts after struggling to break through for a maiden win last season. The way he got to the line over 1800m suggests he’ll relish the trip up to 2000m on Sunday.

John Moore is well known as a “big race” trainer. He’ll saddle up 3 in the Derby and may well be unlucky not to have 4 runners starting, as Destined For Glory (1st Emergency – ($9) would be considered a serious chance should any runner go amiss before the weekend. His main hope would have to Xtension ($5), who brings some European Classic form to the shores of Hong Kong where he ran a very respectable 4th in the English 2000 Guineas. He looks assured of getting the trip as most of his best work is done at the end of his races.

Jacobee ($7) is another of Moore’s runners and must be respected, even though he has taken a less traditional route to the Derby. He took on the older horses in the Group 3 Centenary Vase last start, acquitting himself nicely for a fast finishing 3rd to stablemate Mighty High. He does have ability on his day and a Derby win would not be unexpected.

Let Me Handle It ($8.50) rounds off runners under the $10 mark. Caspar Fownes is no stranger to Derby Success having won last year’s Derby with Super Satin. The son of High Chapparral, himself an Epsom and Irish Derby winner, has quietly gone about his business with career wins over 1400m, 1600m and 1800m.

Such is the dominance of Ambitious Dragon, New Zealand Derby winner Military Move is at the lucrative odds of $34, Free Judgement who ran a gallant 2nd in the Irish 2000 Guineas is at $101 and New Zealand Derby placegetter Handsome Zulu is a very backable $31.
